Spirometry is the main diagnostic test used to support the diagnosis of lung diseases. During the first phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020-2021, spirometry testing was halted throughout primary care services in Wales to reduce the risk of infection. Following the introduction of the Welsh Government’s restart and recovery plan in summer 2021, health boards began to seek ways to restart various services, including spirometry testing. This article describes an initiative undertaken by the primary care respiratory team at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to reintroduce spirometry testing in primary care via nurse-led spirometry diagnostic hubs. The hubs provided patients with holistic respiratory assessments, accurate diagnosis and ongoing treatment and management. The hubs also served as a learning resource for general practice nurses and other community staff to develop or update their spirometry skills.
