I remember being crash bleeped to the emergency department (ED) for a nine-month-old infant who presented with a prolonged seizure. She had ventriculoperitoneal shunt in situ for hydrocephalus. Anaesthetists intubated her and, as a brain scan suggested a blocked shunt, she was transferred to tertiary hospital by a multidisciplinary team, including an ED nurse, and a resident consultant.
