Infantile colic is characterised by excessive crying and affects between 16 and 26 per cent of babies (Garrison and Christakis 2000). Despite being harmless to the baby, it can be very stressful for already exhausted parents, can affect the parent-child bond, could increase the risk of child abuse and has been linked with postnatal depression (Akman et al 2006).
