Casualties of war

Andrea Needham , Newly-qualified staff nurse

Are nurses taught enough about the effects of war on health? Andrea Needham thinks not

The first day of my nursing course will remain in my mind forever. Not because it marked the start of a new stage in my life, but because it was the also the first day of the Gulf War.was up early to make all my last minute preparations, and as I dressed I switched on the television to be greeted by the sight of military aircraft taking off in the darkness and the flashes of bombs raining down upon the people of Iraq.felt numbed and revolted that the war was started barely minutes after the appropriately named ‘deadline’ had passed.
