From international recruit to the UK’s first Filipino chief nurse

Lynne Pearce Health journalist

Oliver Soriano explains what his career journey can show others

Oliver Soriano describes his appointment as the first Filipino chief nurse in the NHS as having had a huge impact on other internationally educated nurses. ‘There’s been a seismic movement around the Filipino community,’ he says. ‘People are approaching me – and not just Filipinos but black and Asian minority ethnic colleagues, too – saying I’ve motivated their community and themselves. Others have said “you’ve made me believe I can stay in the NHS”. It humbles me.’
