Andrew Hopkins Co-ordinator, Community mental health team, South Rhymney Valley
If nurses face hostility from patients and clients they need to know how to defuse the situation. Lee Lanciotti and Andrew Hopkins describe a workshop devised to give them the necessary skills
Aggression and hostility form a familiar backdrop to the work of many nurses. A recent survey by the RCN indicated that a problem of violence did exist - a quarter of respondents stating that they had experienced verbal abuse within the previous year (1). Defining aggression is a difficult task with many measurements being the subjective feeling which can be summed up as ‘I feel threatened.’
