Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment is being undertaken in the UK as a result of a national drive to reduce premature mortality and the economic burden of vascular disease. This article focuses on ways in which primary care teams can implement a systematic approach to CVD risk assessment. A systematic approach to CVD risk assessment includes identification of the target population, the collection of information and data to calculate a CVD risk score, and management of the results. Primary care teams can work successfully with lifestyle teams and public health to provide a comprehensive service.
