A handshake with the future

Joan Wilk Associate professor
Vicky Talbert Lecturer and faculty clinician, School of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Changing patterns of health care have led to the search for meaningful community experiences for student nurses. Joan Wilk and Vicky Talbert t describe how one American school of nursing went about it

THE EMPHASIS on the delivery of health care in the community has created a demand for greater preparation in a variety of community settings for student nurses. Nursing courses, however, are usually geared to preparing nurses for practice in acute care settings and clinical placement plans for students may lack meaningful exposure to community health care.
