Since the 1960s, hospital nurses have been making changes in the clinical setting which have directly improved the delivery of patient care. The introduction of primary nursing enhanced the nurse-patient relationship and placed higher accountability for patient care with the primary nurse. Similar needs have sparked the development of shared governance structures in nursing.
