Health promotion: how can it improve care?

Mhari Henderson Lecturer in learning disability nursing, Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh

Health promotion can be used with people who have learning disabilities to reduce health inequalities

Health promotion as a term was first coined by the medical historian Henry E Sigerist in 1945. He stated that good living conditions, physical activity, education, rest and recreation were key to promoting good health (Terris 1992).
