The pre-travel consultation should be a health-promotion activity where a thorough risk assessment is carried out and risk management discussed. Travellers should be helped to make appropriate choices about vaccination and prophylaxis, but also to fully understand the management of all other risks identified in relation to their travel plans. This article discusses the important aspects of the pre-travel risk assessment and risk management, and suggests resources to assist the process.
