Promoting a human rights approach for people with learning disabilities in community practice

Martin Bollard Senior lecturer (learning disabilities), Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Coventry University

Martin Bollard examines what nurses working in primary care should be doing to improve treatment of people with learning disabilities

Many serious health conditions occur more frequently in the learning disabled population when compared with the non-disabled population. There has been growing concern that people with learning disabilities are subject to discriminatory attitudes and approaches, resulting in their health needs being consistently undetected and unmet and them being deprived of their basic human rights by a wide range of health services.
