Emily Crowe and colleagues highlight key recommendations from the NICE guideline on anaemia management in chronic kidney disease that are most relevant to primary health care professionals and use a case study to illustrate how these recommendations can be implemented
The National Collaborating Centre for Chronic Conditions produced the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline Anaemia Management in Chronic Kidney Disease with the aim of offering the best clinical advice for anaemia management in adults and children with chronic kidney disease (NICE 2006). Guideline development involved systematic searching, appraising and evaluating evidence-based medicine. Recommendations were formulated at monthly meetings of the multidisciplinary guideline development group (GDG), with representation from nephrologists, anaemia nurse specialists, general practitioners, haematologists, physicians with a special interest in the care of older people, patient and carer representatives, and paediatricians.
