Effectiveness of the ketogenic diet used to treat resistant childhood epilepsy in Scandinavia

Kathy Davis Independent specialist nurse consultant, Colorectal and pelvic floor disorders, Surrey

A large multicentre, retrospective, two-year follow-up survey of 290 children aged 18 years or less involved treatment with individually tailored, ketogenic diets (KD) and additional supplements for drug-resistant epilepsy. KDs comprise high-fat, low-carbohydrate, low glucose and adequate-protein, and are thought to mimic the biochemical changes associated with starvation, which creates ketosis. The study enrolled those attending specialist centres across Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
