Back pain is a common problem that may have physical and psychosocial consequences for the patient if not managed effectively. Assessment should aim to identify any underlying pathology so that targeted treatment can be provided. The nurse has a central role in giving the patient information about managing pain and offering support and reassurance if pain persists.
