Ian Swain and his colleagues have set measurement protocols to assess the suitability of mattresses and cushions in hospital settings

Objective assessment of support surfaces, predominantly mattresses and cushions, is difficult. Pressure is often the only factor that can be measured to obtain any indication of the relative efficiency of products. If measurements are made, the range of the data is large, because of the great anatomical variation between individuals, making it difficult to achieve statistical significance.
