Children’s wards today are cheerful and welcoming, says jane bates. so why don’t we do the same for adults?

‘I love going to the kids’ ward,’ said one of my colleagues. ‘It’s so bright and upbeat. What a pity the older patients don’t have the same cheerful surroundings – all they have to stare at are magnolia walls.’
