Emergency frailty unit helps get patients home quicker

Sophie Blakemore Assistant editor

Staff at Leicester Royal Infirmary have developed a unique way of avoiding the unnecessary admission of older people. Sophie Blakemore reports

A review of activity in Leicester Royal Infirmary’s emergency department (ED) revealed a rise in the number of older people presenting by ambulance, and that these patients were occupying a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources. Managers also discovered that 90 per cent of these patients were being admitted to wards when they did not necessarily need to be there.
