Sandra Birnie and colleagues describe the development of a training programme designed to educate staff in nursing homes in order to help deliver higher quality care to older people

Nursing homes are the UK’s main providers of continuing care and, because modern healthcare systems involve a complex network of providers, it is essential that the benefits of collaborative approaches to education are recognised across all services (werrett et al 2001). One problem faced by nurses in care homes is professional isolation (Taylor 2001) but study days can provide an opportunity to combat this by meeting others in the same field (Lazaro 1998). This gives an opportunity for education, reflection, sharing experiences and the development of ideas into innovations.
