Sameena Khan and colleagues report on an initiative to ensure timely treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy for urothelial malignancies who are at risk of developing infection
An audit of mortality figures for patients undergoing chemotherapy for urothelial malignancies identified three deaths as a result of neutropenic sepsis in the authors’ centre. Before the introduction of the initiative described in this article, midstream specimen of urine samples were taken and sent for analysis for every patient. The development of a protocol to identify at-risk patients aims to ensure timely prescription of antibiotics and avoid admissions for neutropenic sepsis.
