IN JANUARY, president Barack Obama, in his final State of the Union address, announced that the US would commit itself to finding a cure for cancer. In a promise reminiscent of his predecessor Richard Nixon who, in 1971, signed the National Cancer Act and famously declared war on cancer, Mr Obama hopes to harness American innovation, effort and ingenuity in finally defeating the disease.
