In the UK, rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses continue to rise among those aged 16-24. In 2004, young women and men accounted for 74 per cent and 56 per cent of all chlamydia diagnoses and 70 per cent and 41 per cent of gonorrhoea diagnoses, respectively. Young people also account for about 10 per cent of HIV diagnoses each year (The UK Collaborative Group for HIV and STI Surveillance2005).
