On April 13 1999, at a primary care conference in Birmingham, prime minister Tony Blair announced the launch of NHS walk-in centre pilots in the UK. On August 31, 2001, we discovered that we were to be two of the first students to be allocated placements at a pilot centre here in Birmingham. Armed with our portfolios and neatly pressed uniforms, we set forth into this world of government initiatives to pave the way for other students to follow.
