Umbilical cord care in the premature infant
Mark Whiting Paediatric Nurse Manager, Whipps Cross Hospital, Laondon
Mary Fitzmaurice and Mark Whiting describe a study of 50 neonates randomly allocated to one of two cord care procedures with recommendations for further research
The care of umbilical cord stumps in newborn infants has attracted considerable professional interest over the years (1-10). Previous studies of cord care have involved term infants who were receiving care either on post-natal wards or in die community. In this study, 50 premature infants of less than 37 weeks gestation were randomly allocated to one of two cord care protocols.
