The development of a combined standards!quality assurance system is described in this article. Drawing on the work of Goldstone et al and Kitson, the authors discuss the formulation and implementation of a package of core standards for use in a group of hospitals. Heightened awareness of clinical nurses about standards and quality issues and collaborative ventures between wards are identified as benefits of the system.
