We tend to take it for granted nowadays that effective pain relief during childbirth will be available should it be required. But, as Dr Les Brann points out in the booklet accompanying this audiocassette, women haven't always been so fortunate. In the early sixteenth century, a Scottish woman was burned at the stake for requesting some form of pain relief during the birth of her twins!
