It was the toilet doors that finished me. I could cope with the locked wards, the 12-hour shifts, the bouts of homesickness and even with the possums running round in the roof space of the nurses’ home. And there were lots of positives – sunshine, long holidays, parakeets in the hospital grounds. But nothing compensated for the toilet doors – or rather the lack of them.
