I ran away from home once. Actually, ‘ran’ is a bit of an exaggeration, given the volume of fish-paste sandwiches and Paddington Bear books I had decided were among life’s essentials. What with the weight of those and the fact that I was going slowly in the hope that a passing parent would attempt to talk me out of what I was doing, it was more of a funeral march than a run.
