Rita Melifonwu Ward Manager, Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust, Middlesex

If the NHS is committed to combating racism, Rita Melifonwu believes that nurse managers must recognise and respect the skills and experience of nurses from ethnic minority groups

BLACK AND ethnic minority nurses constitute a large percentage of the nursing work- k force and many have anxieties I precipitated by discrimination, f harassment and victimisation. As a result, some become demotivated, dissatisfied with their work and unhappy - with all the consequent implications for service delivery. Others accept the status quo, going along with established systems and attitudes without question, thus becoming servants of the system through their passivity.
