Nutritional screening: an audit

Despite much guidance, patients in hospital are still not eating properly. This article discusses the development of a Nutritional Screening Tool (NST) and an audit of the use of the tool with nutritional supplements. Date of acceptance: December 13 1997
Malnutrition in hospitals has implications for both patient care and trust finances (Larsson et al 1990, Tierney 1996, Wallace 1993). The King’s Fund report A Positive Approach to Nutrition as Treatment (Lennard-Jones1992) explained the continuing problem of malnutrition in hospitals and the community and made key recommendations. One of the primary recommendations was mandatory documentation about each patient’s nutritional status in medical and nursing notes.
