Principles of mental health law and policy

Chris Chaloner Freelance consultant, Healthcare ethics

THE LINKS between mental health care and the law have become well established. Mental health services are subject to statutory regulation, and mental health legislation directly influences both service provision and practice. in addition, the law impacts upon practitioner-patient relationships and, in an increasingly litigious culture, is frequently required to resolve disputes when an objective judgement is demanded. Consequently, mental health professionals require clear and up to date guidance that aids both the unequivocal application of the law and enhances understanding of its inherent complexity.
