The subject of caring

Elizabeth Murray Open and Distance Learning Coordinator, School of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Queen's Medical Centre, Notthingham

Elizabeth Murray describes a new flexible learning programme currently being piloted in Nottingham. Its open and distance learning approach makes it accessible to a variety of those involved in caring for elderly people

In 1979, The Royal Commission on the National Health Service (1) recognised that meeting the health care needs of elderly people is one of the major challenges facing the service, and that all the professions concerned with caring for older people should receive (more training in understanding their needs. With the number of older people in the UK steadily increasing, demand for services will require innovation in care delivery in both hospital and community settings.
